Roulette - How to Play the Game

Roulette is one of the most popular casino games today. It is played by spinning a ball on a purpose built wheel, and betting on which number the ball would rest. The object of the game is to pick the winning number that the ball will land on when it finishes spinning around the wheel.
A roulette wheel is a sophisticated kind of equipment. It is about two and a half feet wide and weighs about 90 pounds. The wheel is located in a shallow bowl with a wall curved towards the inside and is designed to rotate around a vertical axis. The wheel and the bowl are so designed that a small ball can be spun on the inside of the wall. The perimeter of the wheel is evenly divided into pockets that serve as the indentation on the wheel that the ball comes to rest in. These pockets contain numbers from 1 to 36 alternatively colored Black and Red except for the single zero and double zero which are colored green.
The number of pockets depends on the kind of Roulette wheel it is. There are basically two kinds of Roulette wheel: the European and the American. The European wheel has 37 pockets numbered 0-36. In which case, the house edge is 2.7 %. The American wheel has 38 numbers because of the additional double zero (00). The house edge in American wheel is 5.3 % due to this extra number.
The game goes this way. First the dealer spins the wheel in one direction and then spins a ball in the opposite direction. The ball travels on a tilted circular track running around the circumference of the wheel. After several rotations, the ball loses its momentum and finally drops into one of the pockets. If the ball drops, for example, on 13, we say that the winning number is 13. The dealer first collects the losing chips and pays the winning players. Every bet on the layout either wins or loses.
Roulette bets are made by placing the chips in certain parts of the betting area. The player should fully understand where and how the bets are placed. Roulette layouts have two betting areas. The inside betting area contains the individual numbers. The outside betting area has boxes for the columns, red/black and odd/even and different groups of numbers. The numbers on the inside are arranged in 12 rows of three numbers forming three vertical columns. The layout of both the American and European wheel is almost the same, except that the American layout has an extra double zero. Both the 0 and 00 are at the top of the columns.
Every Roulette table has a minimum and maximum bet limit set by the house. The players may place new bets as soon as the previous bets are removed and until several moments before the ball drops in a pocket. Players can continue to place bets until the dealer announces "No more bets."
